The Alliance for Combatting Metal Theft was set up in 2017 by the 'victims' and key stakeholders affected by metal theft in response to the Government review of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. The Review of the Act followed a reduction in enforcement agency funding dedicated to tackling metal theft despite growing reports of increasing metal theft incidents.

Following the election, Alliance members were joined by The National Archdeacon Forum, ChurchCare and Virgin Media in asking newly elected Members of Parliament to ensure that the Home Office does not rush the review of the Act through without giving it the careful consideration required, making the necessary amendments and putting it before the House.

In addition, the Alliance is asking the Government fund a metal theft task force. Given that the Act has never been tested in a positive market environment and that prices are increasing, it is likely that reports of significant metal theft will only continue, if not increase.

Open letter to Members of Parliament.
